When you experience problems with your submersible pump, in the well, it is often very expensive to have someone come out to pull the pump out of the well to see what is wrong. Many home owners, who are handy, can do this themselves.

In a well where you have rigid PVC pipe, it will be necessary to construct a tripod over the well to pull out your pipe. Most PVC pipe is 20' long, and you need to pull up above the top of the well, and still have room for a pipe holder, and an elevator. We suggest building a tripod from 2" galvanized steel pipe.

Buy 4 lengths of 2" x 21' long galvanized steel pipe. Cut one length into three 7' lengths, and have the ends rethreaded. Thread the 7' lengths onto the 21' lengths and you now have 3 legs that are 28' long. Put a 2" galvanized steel Tee on the end of each leg, and run a chain through it. Padlock the chain through the tees and you now have a 28' tall tripod that is suitable for use in most wells 300' deep or so.

The top of your tripod is an excellent place to secure your lifting mechanism, whether it is a block and tackle, a chain hoist, or a small winch that you can use to control lifting and lowering pipe in your well.

We offer the tools you will need to service your water well system. The pipe holder we recommend is the Kwik Klamp pipe holder. The elevator we recommend for lifting and lowering your PVC pipe, is the JK pipe elevator. If you are using 1" PVC you will use the 10JK1 pipe elevator. If you are using 1-1/4" PVC you will need the 12JK1 pipe elevator. Both units will go around the pipe below the coupling, have a pin that holds it shut, and 1/4" chain with a 1250 lb test rating to secure to your lifting mechanism.

If your pump is hung on poly coiled pipe, you may be able to pull it by hand, with the help of a couple of friends. Be sure to take an old garden hose and wrap it around the top of the casing. Cut the hose off and slit the side so you can place it on the well casing to protect against nicking your poly pipe or your pump wire.
